Ravenwood, a global leader in linerless labelling technology, has introduced an innovative solution for retailers looking to use recessed carton board trays with removable plastic lids. This form of packaging is an attractive and popular option for ‘food to go’ retailers looking to boost production efficiency, improve food safety and increase customer satisfaction with kerbside recyclability.
Ravenwood’s new linerless solution means that packers can now run both flat-bottomed and recessed trays on the same machine without the need for complicated change parts which could be difficult to set up. This significantly increases operational efficiency and flexibility in production and enhances the versatility of Ravenwood’s Nobac 5000 linerless applicator.
Previously, recessed trays with lids were typically labelled using a C-Wrap label along with an additional plastic tamper proof label that had to be applied by hand to the reverse of the pack. This method was both time-consuming and labour-intensive. The new solution utilises a D-wrap linerless label that spans the top of the lid, wraps down the sides of the tray, and adheres to the base, streamlining the process. The requirement for an extra tamper-proof label is no longer necessary.
Jan Rees, Ravenwood’s UK Sales Manager said: “This is a significant milestone for Ravenwood as we continuously seek innovative solutions to tackle labelling challenges with linerless.”
“And for consumers with busy lives, who consume on-the-go meals. It allows for easy disposal and ensures that packaging can be recycled alongside other household items. This convenience not only supports sustainable practices but also reduces waste in landfills, making it a responsible choice for those seeking quick and climate conscious meal options.”
The combination of recessed carton board trays and lids is gaining popularity in the ‘food to go’ sector. These trays are easy to stack and store and streamlines the packaging process for staff in both factories and supermarkets. Additionally, the clear lids enhance visual appeal by showcasing the freshness of the product, which can also encourage impulse purchases. Furthermore, the design supports portion control, ensuring consistent servings and helping to reduce food waste.
The new linerless solution has already been successfully implemented by two of the UK’s largest food retailers across their ranges of poke, buddha and katsu bowls.
